And since Thunderbird appears to retrieve only NEW+UNREAD (since the last mail check) from the Gmail server, it sure looks like Thunderbird is no longer acceptable for me since all my "new" mail since last checked is no longer 100% appearing in INBOX. Unless I'm missing something it appears that the new Gmail UI seems to no longer provide be any way to prevent those other devices from ALWAYS changing the status of those emails from UNREAD to READ when read/previewed first on those devices. Is there really no longer any way (via Gmail account settings, or Thunderbird setup/configuration, or MAIL app configuration on the phone/tablet) for a Gmail account holder to guarantee that ALL newly arriving mail into my Gmail account is properly retrieved by Thunderbird whenever it is used, no matter whether the MAIL apps on those other devices are used first? So? Is there no longer a way with Gmail to use Thunderbird on PC and also use MAIL apps on other devices? But if I wanted to still use Thunderbird, what should I do? Again, I understand I can just go to Gmail/browser and put this all behind me. This obvioulsy will make the entire problem disappear.īut I'm wondering how others have dealt with this conceptual problem, and how they've resolved the problem, in light of how Google/Gmail is simply forcing all previewed messages (on devices) to change from UNREAD to READ, with the consequential negative effect on Thunderbird.Īny thoughts or help or suggestions appreciated. Obviously the easiest thing it to simply never use Thunderbird again, and just move to Gmail via browser on the PC, and forget about the syncing issue and READ/UNREAD, etc. So, am I missing something? Are others similarly affected? What have you done to overcome this? So as things work right now if the iphone/ipad is used to preview mail before Thunderbird is used, none of that "now READ" mail is not delivered to Thunderbird (which is only given UNREAD mail by Gmail). And there doesn't appear to be a related setting, that can do the same as it used to do, which is to just leave all new mail in an UNREAD state no matter whether previewed or not. Well now there is no official "preview pane" in the new Gmail UI. That way the device early reading of email didn't alter the "UNREAD" status of new mail, so that when I finally got to Thunderbird all of that recent new mail was delivered, no matter whether I had previously read/previewed it or not on the other devices. previewed) on the other devices previously.īefore Google eliminated old "classical view" for Gmail in browser, there was a way to configure the account so that there was a "preview pane" in Settings, and you could set "mark read NEVER". The objective is to always receive "new mail" on Thunderbird on PC, no matter whether that mail has already been "read" (i.e. Long time user of Gmail Workspace hosted email address, using both iphone/ipad MAIL as well as Thunderbird on PC.
